Brown closes with a flurry, Churchill senior claims girls' championship, By Josh Barr, Thursday, October 22, 2009, http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/10/21/AR2009102103838.html Her front nine was a mess. Diana Brown three-putted three holes. She had a double bogey after finding a sand trap and then duffing a chip. The player who strived for consistency was struggling so much that she played even more conservative. "I was afraid," the Churchill senior said. "Just like, 'Make bogey, don't make double" bogey. Then, as Brown came down the stretch in the final round of the Maryland state tournament, things suddenly changed. Shots she wanted just to get close to the hole started going in. There was the downhill, 30-putt birdie on 14th hole. And the seven-iron off the tee that she stuck within two feet on the par-3 17th. Nursing a one-stroke lead at the turn, Brown pulled away with a stretch of four birdies in five holes to claim the individual girls' championship with a two-day total of 78-76 -- 154 on Wednesday at Potomac Ridge in Waldorf. "The front nine was not good, I think I was really nervous," said Brown, whose older sister, Christine, played golf at Vanderbilt, while another sister, Alex, currently plays for Bucknell. "The back nine, I was a whole new player." Brown's run started with three consecutive pars. From just off the green in two shots, then she chipped and made a 12-footer for birdie on a par-5. Then came the long putt, another par and another birdie on a par-5. Her terrific tee shot on the next-to-last hole elicited a gasp from the small crowd that let Brown know she had hit a good shot. North Point junior Mckenzie Cutter, who entered the second round tied with Brown, finished second at 159, unable to keep up with Brown's flurry of birdies. "I was sticking them close, I just couldn't drop any," Cutter said. "She was on fire. They were really tricky putts. She hit the right speed and it would die into the hole." Continues

Go Bulldogs!!! ~K Teitelbaum Soccer-Girls Varsity: As the temperature plummeted on Monday evening, the Churchill Girls Varsity soccer team escalated their offensive efforts and finished with a 4-0 victory over the Sherwood Warriors at the latter's home field. Playing on a field heavily impacted by recent games and the weather, the Churchill scoring was initiated by senior Pam Vranis who, despite being-man-marked for much of the game, broke free for a shot from the right side. Later in the first half, Vranis centered the ball for sophomore Jenna Cantor, who pirouetted away from her defender and fired a point blank shot into the goal for a 2-0 lead. The third goal resulted from junior Alexis Shay's carrying the ball upfield and then shooting from about 30 yards out and finding the range. The final goal was netted by Shay as well, off of a pass from Vranis. With the shutout, the Girls Varsity moved their record to 9-0, with a big makeup contest with Wootton scheduled for Wednesday night. ~B Levine Soccer Notebook, Parity across the area keeping it interesting, By Paul Tenorio and Mark Giannotto, The Washington Post, Thursday, October 22, 2009 Boys' soccer coaches and players around the area emphasized entering this season that, unlike past years when perennial powers were clear favorites to win titles, this year there was no top dog considered to be the hands-down "team to beat." Sure enough, few contenders have made it through the regular season unscathed. Top-ranked programs such as DeMatha and Sherwood have fallen to division opponents -- the previously-unbeaten and top-ranked Warriors lost to Blair and Churchill this week -- and just two teams in the Post's Top 10 remain unbeaten, with No. 4 Northern (14-0) the only team not to lose or tie. Each week, The Gazette Sports' staff of five writers picks winners for every Montgomery County high school football game. Gazette Football Forecasters Week Eight Churchill at Sherwood: John Y.
